To help you get started and make the most of your Seedfan, we’ve put together a comprehensive step-by-step guide and an instructional video.
Browse through our detailed instructions below, and watch the video for visual guidance.

1. Ensure privacy
Find a private spot outside the view of visitors, windows or cameras. This is important because you don’t want your seed to be exposed to a person or a recording device.

2. Prepare the engravement pen
Insert two new, strong AAA batteries in the engravement pen. If the power of the engravement pen is weak, replace the batteries.

3. Open the Seedfan
Unscrew the Seedfan Steel and keep the screws safe.

4. Start with writing down your wallet information
Use the engravement pen to write your wallet name, creation date and master fingerprint in the bottom section of the Seedfan. By starting with the wallet information, you will learn to write with the pen.

5. Back-up the seed phrase
Now carefully write the seed phrase (12 or 24 words) in steel with the engravement pen. Do not correct a mistake. Rather strike through and add the number and word in an empty spot in the bottom section.

6. Check the seed phrase back-up
It’s key to check if you back-up is correct. To check this, you can factory reset your hardware wallet and restore it from the steel seed phrase. Note that it’s key to secure any funds before you factory reset your device.

7. Back-up your passphrase (optional)
If you use a passphrase, you can back it up on the steel passphrase plate using the engravement pen. Note that a passphrase is case sensitive. If you like you can also back-up other important passwords.

8. Draw the seed-QR on steel (optional)
Export the seed-QR with a compatible hardware wallet and use the permanent marker to draw the dots in the grid. Once finished, scan the Seed-QR to test your wallet back-up and restore your wallet.

9. Punch the seed-QR in steel (optional)
To make sure that the seed-QR is written down durable, you need to punch holes in steel. Use the center pen to punch holes in the dots of the Seed QR.

10. Secure your back-up
Close the Seedfan and store it on a secure location. Store the Passphrase card in another secure location. You can use the corner hole to mount the plates in a tactical location.

11. Sit back and relax
Your bitcoin wallet is backed-up based on the highest security practices.

The ergonomic electric engravement pen practically writes like a normal pen. It’s paramount that you write clearly, while not pushing the pen too hard. That’s why it’s recommended to start writing down information in the bottom section of the Seedfan. Backing-up your wallet name, creation date and master fingerprint will enable you to get used to writing with the pen before backing-up your seedphrase.

It’s possible that you make a mistake while using the engravement pen. Maybe you have written the wrong seedword or you made a spelling error. It’s strongly recommended not to correct the writing, but rather strike-through and write the correction in the top or bottom section of the Seedfan.

Adjust the resistance and strength of the center pen by twisting the two parts. It’s recommended to test the pen on a piece of scrap metal or wood to determine the desired resistance and depth of the punch.

Use cleaning alcohol or a nail polish remover to clean the permanent marker dots on the QR grid.

The seed-QR can be scanned with most camera enabled hardware wallets like the Passport, Jade or SeedSigner. The SeedSigner allows you to export your seedphrase as a QR code. This video explains how to export your seedphrase as a seed-QR.
